Botanical Printing

Liz Gaffney Whaite teaches this class, class will be in english.

Homework for students before class?:
Look at what plants grow mostly around you 

 

Imprinting plant leaves and flowers onto fabrics and paper. Botanical Printing is sometimes called Eco Printing. It is chemical alchemy on a cellular level using a combination of natural minerals and plants.

Learn how to print plant patterns on paper or cloth.
Scotlands plants are very similar to Icelandic species.

An Icelandic Sweater with a modern twist

Gamla Þingborg

This workshop is based on a design idea derived from an old Icelandic sweater from ca. 1920. The design of the sweater has been updated and adapted to modern knitting techniques and trends that have been developing in the past years. Through the choice of materials and colors participants will be able to put their own spin on the sweater design. A ready-made pattern by Helga will be used.

Materials (yarn for sweater) is not included in the clinic fee. The teacher will get in touch before the clinic with information and suggestions for choosing yarns.

Traditional knitting techniques, top down knitting, multicolor knitting, short rows, increases, color play, iCord. Emphasis on professional knitting techniques and finishes.

Participants birng their own traditional knitting tools, scissors, measuring tape, sewing needles, etc. A good choice of quality knitting needles in common sizes (3 – 6 mm) is necessary.

Tanning a small lambskin.
Group 1

Lene Zachariassen teaches this hands on workshop in English and Icelandic.

All tools and a number of small lambskins at different stages of the tanning process will be provided. At the end of the workshop everybody leaves with one fully tanned lambskin. This is not the same we are working on at the beginning of the class but one that Lene has prepared and that is finished in class. All the skins are from lambs that are stillborn or die shortly after birth.

Participants learn the entire tanning process. The skins are washed and scraped and put into the tanning brine. Already prepared tanned hides are stretched onto boards and tanned and dried skins will be sanded and softened.  Everybody will go home with one soft and wonderful skin.

What studends have to bring: working clothes, waterproofs, boots, rubber gloves, hammer.

Lock spinning straight from the Icelandic fleece

Maja Siska teaches both in English and Icelandic.

This is not a beginner´s class. You need to be able to operate your spinning wheel.

Included is raw wool and locks straight from the fleece. 

What participants need to bring:
A spinning wheel in good working order with art yarn set up (large orifice) , no or only few hooks on flyer – if you need advice on this or want to borrow a wheel pls contact Maja directly BEFORE registering: majasiska@gmail.com

Starting with extreme Icelandic tail spinning we explore different types of spinning directly from the Icelandic fleece.

Learn the basics and start spinning using a spinning wheel. Lærðu grunnin í að læra að spinna á rokk.  We cover the basic spinning method, practice to treadle, and spinn yanr from carded fiber/ roving.

Spinning on a drop spindle

We learn to spin on a drop spindle, learn the names and functions of wool preparing tools and spindles, wool and spinning. This class is for beginners and also fun for people that have already worked with wool and spinning.

No previous experience necessary.

What do you need to bring:
If you have bring cards and spindle. Bring apron, paper bag or other bag to take your work home with you. Writing things to take notes.

Design and Knit Colourwork Bunting or Baubles

Deborah Gray is teaching this class in English.

Learn how to design and knit unique knitted bunting or baubles. Incorporate your own motifs which celebrate your inspiration. Includes how to work a Knotted Steek

Students need to bring: 
2.5 – 2.75mm needles for your preferred method of knitting small diameters in the round e.g. set of double pointed needles or long circular needle (for Magic Loop).
Pencil, eraser, (coloured pencils optional). 

Students will each need small amounts of 3 – 5 or more colours of fingering-weight yarn. 

Sources of inspiration e.g. photographs, images, small objects.

Giant knitting

You will learn how to knit with the Tröllaband from Uppspuni mini mill with giant knitting needles (20mm). You will knit a pillow to take home after the workshop.
