Travel Information

Most of the classes will be at Þingborg community centre and the market on the final day will be there as well but many events are going to be further away into neighbouring communities, towns and villages. There are a lot of places to stay to attend events and further down this page is a list of  accommodation. This is a non-exhaustive list and we update it when we have new information.

Yes, we recommend getting a car so you can attend every event at the Wool Week. There is some distance between the locations and there is no public transport available to get there. There are so many different things to see and do and to see most of the events at Wool Week you need a car to get around.

See here event locations from South Iceland Wool Week 2022:

Yes, Klettholt has an organised tour for this year’s South Iceland Wool Week.

Flóahreppur

Flóahreppur is an agricultural community in the south of Iceland. Þingborg community centre is located in Flóahreppur and is our main venue and where most of our events will be.

Flóahreppur has beautiful nature and beautiful mountain view closer to the shore line south of Þingborg. Urriðafoss waterfall is close to route 1, beautiful agricultural area on the banks of Iceland’s longest river Þjórsá and Dælarétt is thought to be one of the oldest structures in Iceland where farmers gathered to round up sheep after the summer.

Selfoss

Selfoss is a town in south Iceland right next to Flóahreppur. Selfoss is the heart of south Iceland and a few events at the Wool Week will be in Selfoss. It is about a 7 minute drive from Þingborg community centre.

Selfoss is the largest town in south Iceland and the countries biggest river by volume, Ölfusá flows through the town. Selfoss’s new town centre boasts of art galleries and great restaurants. Down south to the shore are two villages, Eyrarbakki and Stokkseyri. Eyrarbakki used to be the biggest town in Iceland but now it is a quiet village with colourful houses. Stokkseyri is a charming little village with a beautiful seashore.

Ásahreppur, Rangárþing ytra & Hella

Our opening event, The Sheep Colour Show, is on the farm Árbæjarhjáleiga in Rangarþing ytra. Uppspuni – Mini mill is in Ásahreppur.

Ásahreppur and Rangárþing ytra are agricultural communities just like Flóahreppur. The village Hella is a part of Rangárþing ytra muncipality and is about a 25 minute drive from Þingborg community centre and is furthest to the east of these three communities.

There are a lot of beautiful places to see in this area. You can drive up north along route 26 and see the famous volcano Hekla up close, but a 4×4 car is necessary to do that. In October you can drive the country roads and see sheep roaming the fields as well as horses. The caves of Hella are man made caves well worth a visit, older than what is believed to be the settlement year of Iceland. Ægissíðufoss and Árbæjarfoss are two waterfalls in the area along the Ytri-Rangá river that flows through Hella.

There are many events in this area, the drive from Þingborg community centre to Hella takes you through Ásahreppur and then through Rangárþing ytra and to Hella. Open studios and workshops will be in this area.

Skeiða og Gnúpverjahreppur

Skeiða og Gnúpverjahreppur is an agricultural community in the south of Iceland, just north of Flóahreppur.

Skeiða og Gnúpverjahreppur covers a big area and has beautiful landscape. From the southern part where it has beautiful agriculture to the centre highlands in Hofsjökull glacier. The Þjórsá river valley in this area is well worth a visit. The river Fossá flows through the valley before it joins Þjórsá and in Fossá are beautiful waterfalls like Hjálparfoss and Háifoss as well as Gjáin, an oasis in the middle of a desert up country in the south of Iceland.
