Microwave and stovetop dyeing

Skinnhúfa

Learn how to dye any animal-based fiber, yarn or even an entire sweater. This can be done in pot or even in your microwave! Students will learn techniques such as single color and rainbow gradients, and color blending with powdered pigment dyes.

Tanning a small lambskin.
Group 2

Lene Zachariassen teaches this hands on workshop in English and Icelandic.

All tools and a number of small lambskins at different stages of the tanning process will be provided. At the end of the workshop everybody leaves with one fully tanned lambskin. This is not the same we are working on at the beginning of the class but one that Lene has prepared and that is finished in class. All the skins are from lambs that are stillborn or die shortly after birth.

Participants learn the entire tanning process. The skins are washed and scraped and put into the tanning brine. Already prepared tanned hides are stretched onto boards and tanned and dried skins will be sanded and softened.  Everybody will go home with one soft and wonderful skin.

What studends have to bring: working clothes, waterproofs, boots, rubber gloves, hammer.

Icelandic sweater with a modern twist

Gamla Þingborg

Students should bring traditional knitting tools, scissors, measuring tape, sewing needles, etc. A good choice of quality knitting needles in common sizes (3 – 6 mm) is necessary.

Materials (yarn for sweater) is not included in the class fee. The teacher will get in touch before the class with information and suggestions for choosing yarns. 

Traditional knitting techniques, top down knitting, multicolor knitting, short rows, increases, color play, iCord. Emphasis on professional knitting techniques and finishes.

This class is based on a design idea derived from an old Icelandic sweater from ca. 1920. The design of the sweater has been updated and adapted to modern knitting techniques and trends that have been developing in the past years. Through the choice of materials and colors participants will be able to put their own spin on the sweater design. A ready-made pattern by Helga will be used.

Gamla Þingborg

Students will learn to produce small ribbons in a traditional way with very simple tools. The ribbons were used as belts, garters, horse tack and more. This technique was commonly used in Iceland until the 20th century. and as early as the Viking time.

Solar dyeing in a jar

Introduction to solar dyeing in a jar. Simple way to plant dyeing wool on a window sill. Each participant will get a skein of yarn prepared for dyeing and plants for dyeing.

The structure of Lopi sweater – Lopi knitting and design

Learn the basic structure of the classic Lopi sweater as well as knitting wth the unspun lopi. Students will knit a beanie with lopi and learn the foundation in designing their own yoke pattern.

Students will need to bring 40cm circular needles in 4mm and 5mm, double pointed needles number 5 and some writing materials to take notes.

One 3mm 100cm long circular needle with a very flexible cable. Two 3mm short double pointed needles (optional).

Small quantity (about 20g) fingering or sock yarn.


Master the Magic Loop technique for knitting small diameter tubes or any size of circle on a long circular needle. Great for socks, hats, gloves, sleeves. No more dpns or needle changes. Knit a gadget pouch, mug cosy or circular mat.

Recommended as preparation for the Knitting Socks Two at a Time class.

What students have to bring: All types of leftover yarn. The yarn has to be resistant, can be two ply or one ply.


Fingerlooped strings are useful in many ways, for example hairties or shoe laces. No tools, only your fingers.

We fingerloop strings in one colour or more with 3-8 stitches, the strings are max 1m long.

We use the tog and tel in different way for spinning three different yarn qualities for socks.
We will make yarn samples for soft and warm socks, light and soft socks for the cold nights and strong socks for everyday use. Learn to spin the perfect yarn for different uses! – Tove teaches 2 different classes on the same day. She has decade of experience in spinning and weaving!

Learn to spin yarn like the women who settled Iceland until drop spindles became popular in the 14th/15th century.

Students have to bring:

– Straight branch, remove the bark and twigs, 120 cm long. Cut a slit around the branch about 1-2cm from one end. Or choose a branch with a small knob, thicket or twig at the top.

– Or choose for example a broomstick. Cut a slit around the wood about 1-2cm from the top.

– 1m long string, 1-2cm width, for example cotton or linen string.

– Pencil and paper

Knitting Socks Two at a Time and Toe Up

Basic knitting skills are required (knit, purl,  increase, cast off), Knitting in the round.

What students have to bring: 100g sock yarn wound into two equal balls. One 100cm long circular needle with a very flexible cable in the appropriate size for the yarn (2.5 – 3mm). Two short double-pointed needles in the same size as the circular needle.


No more second-sock syndrome! Knit both socks at the same time, on one long circular needle. Knit them toe-up for perfect fit and matching.

Deborah’s Introduction to Magic Loop knitting class is recommended as preparation if you are not already confident with the magic loop technique.

Plant dyeing – the basics

The students get a small book with teaching materials and samples of colors. Coffee and refreshments. In the end of the class the students can choose one skein to take home with them from the skeins we colored in the class.

What students have to bring: Comfortable shoes and working cloths. Aprons and gloves are at the studio.


The students learn the basics in plant dyeing. We will go through the process from beginning to end. Mordanting, boiling the plants, coloring, changing the color, drying and finishing. We will talk about the plants that we used in Iceland in the old days and what is possible to use now. The class is hands on and we work together in the dyeing process, talk and have fun together.. That is how we learn..

We will spin yarn samples suitable for knitted everyday sweater or warp yarn for woven jacket fabric.

We will remove some of the tog for spinning softer yarn samples suitable for finer sweaters or soft weft yarn for weaving.
We add more tog for spinning samples to outwear or thicker weaving yarn. Design the yarn for its purpose and become a better and more versatile spinner.

Tove´s classes 2 classes also work as a one day class!
